Program Description

The InnovationSpace program provides a unique opportunity for teams of senior-level students to complete a real-world product development project that potentially contributes to a better society. In the InnovationSpace program, students are challenged to work together to create comprehensive New Business Venture Proposals, focusing on a new product design concept.

Integrated Innovation
The program is structured around a model of innovation called Integrated Innovation. It involves interdisciplinary teams of students in:

  • gathering information about consumer demand, technology, market conditions/trends, and social/environmental conditions/trends
  • defining key conclusions and "Actionable Insights"
  • developing a comprehensive New Business Venture Proposal that includes the conceptual specification of new product design concepts and communication strategies.

Read more about Integrated Innovation >>

New Business Venture Proposals should clearly communicate why the concept is:

  • useful, usable and desirable (from a consumer's perspective)
  • feasible (from a technological perspective)
  • valuable (from a market perspective)
  • progressive (from a social and environmental perspective)

The program is project-based but includes readings, presentations (by both faculty and students), discussion and the public exhibition/presentation of each team's New Business Venture Proposal to external groups. Student teams will produce product design concepts, communication strategies and functioning prototypes. Teams will be expected to provide a rationale for 1) the technological feasibility of product design concepts, 2) the market opportunities created by the concepts, and 3) how the products positively impact society and the environment. The textbook used for the program is Creating Breakthrough Products, by Jonathan Cagan and Craig Vogel.
